VAC-2025-0040: SAFETY COORDINATOR

The Safety Coordinator will play a vital role in supporting the safe planning, execution, and operation of renewable energy assets by implementing and monitoring health and safety policies, procedures, and practices. The Health and Safety Coordinator ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards, promotes a strong safety culture on-site, and works to prevent accidents and occupational hazards across the business. The job holder will report to the HSES & Community Liaison Officer.

Key Accountabilities

  • Conduct safety lectures for all levels of employees to improve employees’ understanding of safety rules and regulations to reduce accidents.
  • Conduct site inductions for employees and contractors as well as other training as required.
  • Promote a safety-first culture across the project workforce through behaviour-based safety programs.
  • Assist and partake in the formulation of risk assessments and control procedures.
  • Monitor daily operations on-site to ensure compliance with internal safety policies, local regulations, and international best practices.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, toolbox talks, and audits to proactively identify and resolve hazards.
  • In conjunction with the Transport department, foster compliance to road safety rules and promote defensive driving skills among drivers of Company vehicles.
  • Ensure personal protective equipment (such as hearing protection, dust masks, safety glasses) are issued and available as needed and inspected on a regular basis.
  • Ensure that alcohol screening and confirmation tests at entrance to Company facilities are carried out on employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Maintain and update all safety-related documentation, including incident registers, inspection reports, and safety checklists.
  • Monitor and ensure effective implementation of control measures determined from risk assessments.
  • Carry out health and safety audits of all workspaces and line officials to ensure compliance to safe work procedures.
  • Monitoring performance of the portable and installed alcohol compliance and monitoring equipment.
  • Act as a first responder to accidents or near-miss events and assist with emergency procedures.
  • Carry out in-depth investigations into all reported incidents to determine the direct, sub and underlying causes so as to make appropriate recommendations to management.
  • Assist with the investigation of near-misses, incidents and unsafe working conditions.
  • Work closely with project managers, engineers, contractors, and subcontractors to ensure HSE coordination.
  • Participate in daily/weekly coordination meetings and represent safety interests during planning and execution.

To be considered for this role, you will be required to have:

  • Minimum Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from a recognised institution. A degree in a related field will be an added advantage.
  • Experience in safety investigations and auditing.
  • Experience in the development of safety procedures and standards within the organisation.
  • Certification in occupational health and safety (e.g., NEBOSH IGC or IDIP NEBOSH) is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar role, preferably in the renewable energy or utility sector.
  • Strong observational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with personnel at all levels.
  • Capable of working under pressure and managing emergencies calmly.
  • Good writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Good public relations skills.
  • Good presentation skills using constructive and logical approaches.
  • Computer literate.
  • Sound business acumen with ability to anticipate and interpret changes impacting on health and safety programs and approaches.
  • Knowledge of OH&S systems, preferably ISO 45001:2018 management system.
  • Should have a proactive approach and sound knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety applications along with excellent communication, both written and oral.
