VAC-2025-0028: UNMANNED AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS ANALYST

The Unmanned Aircraft Systems Analyst supports UAV operations as a key member of the flight team. The role is responsible for the on-site acquisition of data using UAV platforms, ensuring the accuracy, quality, and integrity of all collected data. Responsibilities include pre-mission planning, equipment preparation, and coordination with Air Traffic Control (ATC) when required. The position plays a critical role in executing a range of missions such as aerial photography, surveillance, asset inspections, surveying, and emergency response, all in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and internal company procedures.

The position will report to the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Supervisor.

Key Accountabilities

  • Conduct pre-flight inspections to ensure UAV airworthiness, safety, and compliance with ZCAA regulations and the Operations Manual.
  • Maintain accurate records of flight logs, mission reports, and equipment maintenance as required by ZCAA and guided by the operations manual.
  • Plan and coordinate UAV flight missions, factoring in weather, airspace restrictions, NOTAMs, and other operational requirements.
  • Operate UAVs to execute various missions such as aerial photography, surveying, mapping, hotspot inspections, surveillance, security response, infrastructure inspections, etc
  • Deploying UAVs for rapid assessment of power infrastructure in the aftermath of emergencies, providing crucial information for timely restoration efforts.
  • Respond to vandalism incidents by deploying drones to assess damage, provide live monitoring, and assist CEC Security in tracking culprits.
  • Ensuring that UAV operations adhere to relevant regulations and safety standards set by ZCAA, as well as CEC specific safety procedures.
  • Compile comprehensive reports based on the data collected during flights, documenting findings from both routine inspections and security-related incidents to aid in decision-making processes and supporting regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure proper handling, maintenance, calibration, and security of all UAV systems to support safe and reliable operations.
  • Promote safety by adhering to UAV safety protocols, risk management practices, and hazard awareness during all operations.
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with ground crews, ATC, and relevant stakeholders using standard radio protocols.

To be successful in this role, you will be required to have:

  • Full grade twelve (G12) Certificate.
  • RPL – Valid Remote Pilot License from ZCAA (BVLOS) rating would be an added advantage.
  • Experience flying multirotor and fixed-wing drones/model aircraft in a commercial environment.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety will be an added advantage.
  • Professional and relevant certification is an added advantage.
  • At least 100 hours of flying time experience in the aviation industry.
  • Power utility UAV operations experience.
  • Knowledge of UAV mission planning and flight control software.
  • Strong understanding of aviation principles, airspace regulations, and UAV technology.
  • Computer skills.
  • Data management skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
