The Operator will be responsible for driving Company vehicles to transport authorized personnel and freight to and/or from various locations as well as operate trucks and off-highway equipment to transport high-value consignments and perform earthmoving operations in a timely, safe and courteous manner. The job holder will report to the Supervisor – Transport.

Key Accountabilities

  • Receive instructions from immediate supervisor to establish details of tasks (vehicles, materials and personnel).
  • Inspect safety devices, controls, fluid and lubricant levels and hydraulic lines as well as other essential indicators to ensure that the vehicle or equipment is roadworthy before driving it.
  • Complete internal transactional documentation including vehicle pre-journey checklist and logbooks and related forms by inserting the relevant information quantitative/ qualitative and/or details of activities.
  • Drive assigned Company vehicle to transport authorized personnel and freight (consignments, material and equipment) to and/or from various locations timely, safely and in a courteous manner.
  • Drive a range of vehicles such as managerial vehicles, buses, vans and trucks for which the jobholder is duly licensed for in line with the Company’s multi-skilling approach.
  • Strictly follow delivery or pick-up instructions as directed by the supervisor other relevant official.
  • Drive and maneuver heavy and/or off-highway equipment vehicles such tipper Truck, flat truck, low loader, bulldozer and mobile crane in line the company’s multi-skilling policy.
  • Operate heavy and/or off-highway equipment by engaging the controls thereof to operate mechanisms in order to facilitate such specific sequences loading, off-loading/tipping and earth moving operations.
  • Perform loading operations and ensure the safe of freight In transit.
  • Promptly report to the Supervisor-Transport or any other designated official any delays due to weather or traffic conditions or other emergencies in the event of any irregularities relating to pick-up or delivery.
  • Identify and report vehicle defects and accidents to the supervisor for further action.
  • Deliver defective vehicle to the Automotive Garage for repair.
  • Strictly adhere to all road and road traffic legislation and regulations and applicable Company Transport policy, procedures and cardinal rules.
  • Deliver to and collect from the Post Office and/or retained courier service providers, as the case maybe, mail and other deliveries or collections.
  • Maintain an efficient internal mail service by collecting and delivering mail and packages to secretaries and other departmental officials.
  • Contributes to budgetary control by ensuring that spend on departmental activities is within the prescribed budget and supports all opportunities for improved cost management.
  • Demonstrates consistent behavior in line with the Company’s HSE and risk management policies and standards.
  • Carries out all work tasks and assignments In strict compliance with applicable HSE policies and standards by participating in HSE meetings and by completing risk assessments and HSE incident reports.
  • Demonstrates behavior in line with CEC values, standards and expectations of a professional workplace.
  • Participates as an effective team member in working collaboratively with leaders peers and relevant others to achieve business objectives.

To be considered for this role, you will be required to have:

  • Grade 12 School Certificate.
  • Valid SADC Class CE Driver’s License.
  • Accredited as an Affiliate Member of the Zambia Institute of Logistics and transport (ZILT).
  • At least 3 years of professional full-time chauffeur or driving experience and overall accident-free driving record for 5 years.
  • Thorough knowledge of Zambian road traffic legislation, regulations and cardinal rules and familiarity with driving conditions and restrictions.
  • Sound knowledge of road networks in the major cities and towns of Zambia and thoroughly acquainted with the layout of Kitwe and other Copperbelt owns.
  • Proven ability to read road maps and road signs effectively and plan routes of unfamiliar destinations.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of basic automotive inspection and maintenance procedures and working knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems. proven ability to drive both manual and automatic transmission vehicles.
  • Physical stamina to sit and remain alert while driving for an aggregate or continuous period of up to eight (8) hours.
  • Well-disposed to short notice in the assignment of trips, tight delivery schedules and driving all kinds of weather.
